TO’A : coral head
NU’UROA : pointe de Nu’uroa, Puna’auia
The To’a Nu’uroa project is the winner of the ReCorEA call for projects launched in 2022 by the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB). It was created by 2 associations for the protection of the marine environment: Tamari’i Pointe des Pêcheurs and Tamari’i No te Moana. The objective of this project is to improve the coral cover of the Puna’auia reefs following a bleaching episode observed in 2019, which caused coral mortality and colonization of the environment by the invasive algae Turbinaria ornata. To do this, corals will be transplanted using the microfragmentation technique and the Turbinaria will be pulled out to then be valued.

TAMARI’I POINTE DES PÊCHEURS is a 1901 type association created in 2008. Initially founded for a trochus fishing campaign by a family of fishermen, it naturally focused on the protection of the coral reefs of the Pointe des Pêcheurs, in Puna’auia (Tahiti, French Polynesia).
Since 2014, Tamari’i Pointe des Pêcheurs has been working in a sustainable way to:
– Coral restoration in the lagoon of Pointe des Pêcheurs;
– Raising awareness among the general public through various workshops (Rahui, Coral, Waste sorting, Observation of marine mammals, etc.).
Thanks to these actions, the association has cut and monitored nearly 2,462 coral fragments which have made it possible to restore degraded parts of the Punaauia lagoon but also raised awareness among thousands of people through 190 eco-citizen days organized for schoolchildren, businesses and individuals. The association wishes to use its experience in coral restoration techniques but also to raise awareness in the TO’A NU’UROA project.

MATA ‘AVEI’A is a brand new artistic association whose goal is the promotion of contemporary art in French Polynesia. Its founders firmly believe that an artistic gaze brings a unique and different light and understanding, beneficial to both the creator and the viewer. Mata ‘avei’a was born to celebrate plastic expression as a means of communicating a message, and to provide a framework for artists to express their point of view on our Polynesian society. The association wishes to bring a view and a sensitive experience of the TO’A NU’UROA project. It is by collaborating that science and contemporary art will together build a bridge beyond the elitism attributed to them respectively.
