TO’A NU’UROA
“TO’A NU’UROA, literally “corals of Nu’uroa” in reo Tahiti is a multidisciplinary project carried out by the associations Tamari’i Pointe des Pêcheurs, Tamari’i no te Moana and Mata Avei’a. The actors of the protection of the marine environment unite in order to preserve the coral reefs of Puna’auia. A massive bleaching event in 2019 caused significant coral mortality as well as a proliferation of the invasive algae Turbinaria ornata. TO’A NU’UROA’s action program targets several skills: scientific by increasing the coral cover by the microfragmentation technique but also by the massive uprooting of Turbinaria ornata by contributing to its enhancement; artistic by raising awareness through contemporary art; pedagogical by producing pedagogical tools; and audiovisual by producing a documentary support.

The particularity of the To’a Nu’uroa project lies in its multidisciplinary and unifying character, in particular through the organization of an artistic exhibition. The objective of this exhibition is the democratization of the scientific issues of the project through a sensitive and artistic experience. Putting art at the service of raising awareness and awareness of the ecological emergency and the place of corals in Polynesian society, as well as the desire to integrate the voices of local artists into the societal issue of global warming climate and the disappearance of corals, such are the biases of this organization.
Turbinaria ornata is a brown macroalgae with a complex and rigid structure, it is little consumed by herbivores. It develops to the detriment of corals so its proliferation is an indicator of the poor health of a coral reef. In the Nu’uroa area, its invasion is problematic and threatens the marine biodiversity of Puna’auia. Coral restoration assists corals in their resilience and the maintenance of the reef foundation.
